Today I made use of one of the benefits afforded to most freelancers, the long lunch. Everyone who is not a freelancer (mainly Debbie) assumes that an average ‘working’ day for me is comprised of 10am wake up calls, 3 hour lunches and a C.O.B of 4pm. All lies! Today however was different.
Let me explain…Debbie is on holiday this week and decided to organise a lunch at the Senyol/Southey (and McKay) studio along with Cape Town’s latest additions: the Delport brothers. Debbie made a basil pesto penne and the resident artists (minus paul) added croissant bread to the mix (I didn’t know it existed either till today, basically a really loooooooooooong croissant). I seriously felt as if I was on holiday, not in the middle of a work day. None the less I started to get a little bit agitated as the clock moved past 2pm (that’s the end of a normal lunchtime, right?) I could feel my boss tapping her foot (that’s me btw) and pointing at her imaginary wrist watch. I started to feel guilty at the stretching of the lunch past 2pm, past 3pm, 3:30pm (now that’s almost an early dinner…) I had to tell myself it’s ok, once in a blue moon, a long lunch for a freelancer is ok. In fact it’s one of the perks, along with working in ones pyjamas and a really early home time.
On my todo list is to try out the other undiscovered perks of being a freelancer.
For those of you stuck at the office, don’t feel cheated, apparently there are downsides to working for oneself. To find out why working from home is both awesome and horrible click here.
